VERB PATTERNS

slovesa, která se mohou vázat jak s infinitivem, tak s gerundiem a dochází ke změně ve významu.

TRY TO OPEN vs. TRY OPENING

V českém překladu se obě situace přeloží stejně "zkusit otevřít". V angličtině je značný významový rozdíl.

try to open - pokusit se nebo snažit se, nevíte, zda se vám daná činnost podaří

Can you try to open the window? I think it's stuck. = Můžeš zkusit otevřít to okno? Asi je zaseklé.-  (Okno možná ani nepůjde otevřít. -= Pokus se otevřít okno. Já to zkoušel a nepodařilo se mi to).

try opening - daná činnost podaří, a zajímá vás výsledek. Samotná akce tedy není složitá a zvládne to každý

If you're hot, try opening the window. It might help. = Pokud je ti horko, zkus otevřít okno. Mohlo by to pomoci. – (To sníží teplotu v místnosti. = Zajímá nás výsledek činnosti, kterým něco vyřešíme).

Examples:

The girl tried to reach the biscuit jar but she wasn't tall enough.

I'm just trying to help you.

He tried to persuade her, but she wouldn't listen.
What are you trying to do?
I'm trying to find my keys. Have you seen them?
I'm trying to learn English, but it's hard.

I tried using butter instead of margarine and the cake was much better.
If you want to lose some weight, try eating healthier food and go for long walks.
Try adding more salt. The soup might taste better.
I tried talking to Steve about it, but he didn't want to help us.
She tried turning on the fan, but it was still hot.
Paul tried changing the light bulb, but the lamp still didn't work.
Have you tried turning it off and on again, madam?

REMEMBER TO LOCK vs. REMEMBER LOCKING

FORGET TO LOCK vs. FORGET LOCKING

I always remember to lock the door. - infinitiv má význam vzpomenout si, pamatovat si, nezapomenout. – vyjadřuje povinnost, děj který bude, něco co máme udělat - Vždy si vzpomenu a zamknu  dveře. (pamatuji na to, nezapomněl jsem na to)

I didn't remember to lock the door. - Nevzpomněl jsem si na to ty dveře zamknout. (zapomněl jsem na to)

She doesn't remember locking the door. - gerundium má význam vzpomínat si, pamatovat si něco z minulosti - Nepamatovala si, že ty dveře zamykala.

PODOBNÉ JE TO I SE SLOVESEM FORGET.

I forgot to lock the door. - infinitiv říká, že jste něco zapomněli udělat, nevzpomněli jste si na to.
Zapomněl jsem ty dveře zamknout. (nevzpomněl jsme si na to, neudělal jsem to)

I forgot locking the door. - gerundium vyjadřuje, že jste zapomněli, že jste něco před tím udělali. - Zapomněl jsem, jestli ty dveře zamkl.

Examples:

Susan remembered to send the email.
I will remember to water the plants while you are away.
She never remembers to set the alarm clock.

He doesn't remember drinking so much.
I clearly remember putting the money in the kitchen drawer.
We will always remember seeing New York for the first time.

Susan didn't forget to call her mother.
I won't forget to call you when I get there.
I always forget to set the alarm clock.

John forgot drinking so much.
How could I forget putting the money in the kitchen drawer?
I will never forget seeing New York for the first time.

STOP SMOKING vs. STOP TO SMOKE

I stopped smoking. = Přestal jsem kouřit. –přestat s činností

Pokud jste přestali s nějakou činností (až už dlouhodobě či krátkodobě), musíte použít v následujícím slovesu gerundium.

I stopped to smoke. = Zastavil jsem, abych si zakouřil. – účelová věta

Pokud jste se zastavili, abyste něco udělali, použijete další sloveso v infinitivu.

Examples:

He stopped looking at her.
He stopped to look at her.
He stopped playing.
He stopped playing to look at her.

He stopped to look at her.
He stopped and looked at her.

Sloveso SUGGEST

- navrhnout / navrhovat, doporučit

• suggest something – navrhnout něco
• suggest doing something – navrhnout něco udělat
• suggest (that) somebody should do something – navrhnout, aby někdo něco udělal (britská angličtina)
• suggest (that) somebody do something – navrhnout, aby někdo něco udělal (americká angličtina)

SUGGEST sth/sb - navrhnout něco či někoho, navrhnout co komu (suggest sth to sb)

He went over my project and suggested some improvements.
I don't know why they suggested me for the competition.
We suggested to the committee that they review the case again.

SUGGEST doing - když někdo navrhuje něco pro skupinu lidí, do které sám patří.

✅ What did the teacher suggest doing?
❌ What did the teacher suggest to do? - V žádném případě není možné používat za suggest infinitiv.

✅ My brother suggested playing football.
❌ My brother suggested to play football. - V žádném případě není možné používat za suggest infinitiv.

SUGGEST (that) - návrhy pro jinou osobu, vedlejší větou s that (kterou lze ale vynechávat). V britské angličtině je ve větě should.

She suggested (that) I should contact you.
I suggest that you should do that immediately.
It was suggested to me that I should leave the team.

Možné varianty:
I suggested he také/takes/should take it seriously.
She suggested we go/should go for a few drinks.

Examples:

Finland's border guard last month suggested building a fence several metres high, topped with razor wire and equipped with surveillance cameras and sensors along 160 miles of the border—roughly 20% of its total.

And, of course, we want to do this safely, smartly and responsibly. We wouldn't even suggest doing it any other way. Public health is the priority.

I suggest using a meat thermometer to get the perfect cook.
