Rio de Janeiro´s iconic Copakabana beach is well known for its white sands and pristine tropical

coastline but these images certainly won´t be on holiday postcards. 20 km along the coast in Sao

Conrado beach marine biologist Ricardo Gomez describes waves of rubbish lapping the beaches as

the tsunami of trash.

"This is the crime, it is not just a crime against the city of Rio de Janeiro, it is a crime against the

population of Rio de Janeiro. This evil that we do to the ocean is a global crime."

Some of it is easy to recognize. Most of it, Gomez points out, is single-use plastics. The effect on

marine life is evident. "There are 8 million tons of plastics that reach the ocean each year suffocating

marine life and threatening the existence of man on the planet."

The similar wave of trash hit Brazil´s beach in January. The environmental group Instituto Mar Ubano

says 80% of this was caused by heavy rain pushing rubbish into the city´s drainage system and then

out directly to sea. It ´s estimated around 325 tons of plastics is thrown into the Atlantic ocean from

Brazil every year. This is affecting marine life and beaches in about a hundred coastal lagoons in Rio

de Janeiro state.

With President Jair Bolsonaro´s poor record of environmental protection. Activists such as Gomer

take it on themselves to spread awareness and call for individuals to drop plastic consumption.

Find the answers on the Internet.

What does marine biologist do? How can you become a marine biologist? Do you have to study this

profession?

What is Instituto Mar Urbano? What do they do?

Why are the beaches in Rio lapped by trash?

What does it mean to spread awareness and drop plastic consumption?

What are a single-use plastics? Should they be banned?

Who is Jair Bolsano? Why do they say he has poor record of environmental protection?
