The school system in the UK
Children start at primary school when they are five . Before that , many children go to nursery school, e.g. between the ages of 2 and 4, but this is not compulsory . From 11 - 18, children go to secondary schools in the UK. Majority of schools in the UK (about 90%) are state schools, which means that they are paid for by the government, and education is free . The other 10 % are private schools, where parents have to pay. A few of these are boarding schools, where children study, eat and sleep. There are also some religious schools, where the teachers may be priests or nuns .Schoolchildren are usually called pupils and not students that refers only to people who are at university and the person who is in charge of a school is called the head teacher. The school year is devided into three terms. If you want to go to university, you have to take exams in your last year, and if your results are good enough, you get place. A person who has finished university and has a degree is called a graduate.

The school system in the USA
The school system in the US is divided into three levels, elementary school, middle school (sometimes called junior high school) and high school. In almost all schools at these levels, children are divided by age groups into grades. The youngest children begin with kindergarten (followed by first grade) and continue until twelfth grade, the final year of high school. The school year is divided into semesters. Higher education is often called college in the US.

Physical/corporal punishments: like hitting a student, slapping across the face (fackovat), pulling hair (krákat), using a cane (rákoska), pinching (štípání)
Exclusion (vyloučení): a pupil is excluded from the school and cannot come back. The pupil has to find a new school or a different method of education (home tutor, special centre for difficult pupils).
Suspension (dočasné vyloučení): when a pupil is suspended they cannot enter the building or attend lessons until the school has a meeting about their case. Suspension can last from 1 to 45 days in a school term. The school usually gives work to do at home with a tutor (special teacher).
Detention (po škole): a pupil is detained. This means he or she is asked to stay at school at the end of the school day. The pupil must work for 30 minutes or an hour more before they are allowed to leave the school.
Lines (opisování textu za trest): a pupil has to write a sentence many times (100 x) on a sheet of paper: An example sentence: I must not shout in class. This punishment is sometimes given during detention too.
Reprimand (důtka) to express to someone your strong official disapproval of them:
be reprimanded by sb for doing sth - dostat důtku/napomenutí od koho za co
She was reprimanded by her teacher for biting another girl.
Case studyFreya MacDonald, a 15-year-old pupil from Scotland, made the news (novinka) in the UK when she refused to accept her school's punishment. Freya's family say that she was given detention many times for trivial things such as drinking fizzy drinks in class and coming into school through a fire door. After her secondary school gave her detention for the eleventh time, she went to a lawyer and took legal action against the school. The teenager said that it is not legal to keep a pupil in the school building if the student does not want to be there because Scottish law says that it is illegal to detain (zadržovat) children against their will.
