Death penalty

16.11.2023

Debate:

Is it moral to kill people for the greater good? Why do people need to kill other people? Is there a solution to prevent it?

Would you kill one person to save many others? Why do people kill others?

Should the death penalty be abolished (zakázaný)?

Should the death penalty (trest smrti) be revived (obnovena)?

Anders Breivik returns to court with a Nazi salute.

There was no sign of remorse (výčitky svědomí) or rehabilitation (rehabilitace, náprava) as an extreme right-winger (pravičák) Andres Breivik, the mass murderer, made his way into court ( vstoupil do soudní síně) with Nazi salute.

Breivik responsible for the worst atrocity (zvěrstvo) in Norway since World War II wants to change his terms of his detention (podmínky uvěznění) arguing that his solitary confinement (samotka) in jail is in violation (porušení zákona) of the European Convention on Human Rights.

"Many think that this is a case that has raised (vyvolat) so that Breivik can return to the public eye (veřejnost) and come with an explanation but it is simply a case about his incarceration (věznění) for the rest of his life and that in my opinion is most important to establish (prokázat)."

What happened in Oslo and on Utoya island ten years ago still haunts (děsí) Norway. On July 22nd 2011 Andres Breivik set off (odpálit) a car bomb in the capital before travelling to Utoya where youth camp was being held. Brevik was dressed as a policeman and told teenagers he come to protect them. Instead he opened fire (zahájil palbu, začít střílet) at point-blank range ( z bezprostřední blízkosti). Some survivors hid under bodies to try to hide from him. In all (dohromady) Breivik killed 77 people and wounded (zranit) hundereds more.

Afterwards Breivik claimed he was trying to protect Norway from multiculturalim and Muslim immigration. He was charged under ( být odsouzen podle) Norway´s anti-terror laws. At the end of his trial (proces, přelíčení) he was sentenced ( být odsouzen) to a maximum 21 years but can be held indefinitely (na neurčito) if deemed unfit (považovat za nezpůsobilého) to be released (být propuštěn) .

Breivik is held apart from others prisoners and has complained about his treatment in jail before.

"I think it is pathetic (opovrženíhodné) because he killed 77 people and wounded a lot and several hundred people are grieving (truchlit) and having a tough time."

The state will argue that the prison conditions are lawful (legitimní).
