White lies

How often do you lie? How often do you think other people lie to you? How often are we lied to? Why do we lie?
Can you say 3 sentences about yourself where one is a lie?
The average person will tell at least three lies in a ten-minute ocnversation.
It is OK to lie in order not to hurt people´s feelings.
Teenagers lie to their parents.
Men and women tell the same number of lies but they lie about differen things.

Can we spot a liar?

There are a number of different reasons why we lie. We might lie for personal gain (osobní prospěch), we might lie to avoid punishment (vyhnout se trestu), we might lie because we get a kick out of (bavit se) pulling the wool over somebody else´s eyes (věšet bulíky na nos, balamutit). Everybody lies. Imagine the situation where we told the truth all the time, we certainly wouldn´t have friends for more than 24 hours.
People lie to get rewards and avoid harm (újma). To get a good job people lie on their CVs. We lie to gain more money. People also lie often because they want others to see them more favourably (kladně). In order to get a better date (partner), they lie on a dating app.
Researchers suggest that when we are married about one in 10 of our interactions (výměna informací) is a form of deception (podvod). But when we are in the early stages of getting to know a person, or dating them, it can be as high as almost half the things, that we tell the other person could be deceptive (klamý) in some kind of way.
The most common type of lies that we tend (mít tendenci) to tell are the white lies, the protective lies (dobře míněná lež, milosrdná lež); e.g. telling your mother that her meatloaf (karbanátek) is delicious when you really hate the meatloaf, telling your friend that she doesn't look fat in her dress when she asks because you don't want to tell her that she's gained a lot of weight and looks heavy (silná).
Recent research has found that people lie more often in emails and on social media than in face-to-face encounters (setkání), it is called a virtual lie (virtuální lež, lhaní na sociálních sítích). What's worse is that virtual communication is now preferred over direct communication. Studies have shown that, in business, on average, people lie once in every fifth negotiation (vyjednávání) lasting longer than ten minutes.
We like to think of ourselves as very honest, trustworthy and truthful people. So one of the reason that we might not be good at tracking (sedování) how often we have lied is that we protect ourselves, our self-esteem (hrdost) and make ourselves feel better about ourselves.
